A Few Minutes a Day, a Lifetime of Benefit
Your daily habits play an important role in maintaining a healthy smile between dental visits. Explore simple ways to protect your teeth and gums and make the most of your professional dental care.
Build a Simple Daily Routine
A healthy smile starts with consistency at home. Brush twice a day for two minutes with a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste, and floss once a day to clean between teeth where a brush can’t reach. If flossing feels awkward at first, a water flosser or floss picks can make it easier to stick with.
Replace your toothbrush (or electric brush head) every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles look frayed — a worn brush cleans less effectively and can be harder on your gums.
Watch What — and How Often — You Sip and Snack
Frequent snacking and sugary or acidic drinks give the bacteria in your mouth more chances to produce the acid that wears away enamel. Try to keep sweets to mealtimes, rinse with water after coffee, tea, or soda, and reach for water between meals to keep your mouth rinsed and hydrated.
Watch for Changes
Between visits, pay attention to your mouth. Bleeding gums, new sensitivity to hot or cold, a tooth that feels different when you bite down, or a sore that doesn’t heal within a couple of weeks are all worth a call to our office. Catching small changes early usually means a simpler, more comfortable fix.
Make the Most of Your Professional Visits
Regular cleanings and exams do more than polish your smile — they let our team catch early signs of decay or gum disease before they become bigger problems as part of your General & Family Dentistry care. Come prepared with any questions or changes you’ve noticed, and let us know about any new medications or health changes since your last visit.
If it’s been a while since your last cleaning, or you’ve noticed a change in your smile, we’d love to see you. Call New Patients: (205) 583-0086; Existing: (205) 871-7361 or request a visit and our team will find a time that works for you.
